On June 28, 1943 at 10.45 pm Wellington HZ438 took off from Ingham Air Base, mission was to bomb the city of Cologne in Germany. The aircraft was shot down on the way over Hageland by night fighter Oberleutnant Paul Zorner 1NJG3. The aircraft crashed at 02:22 in Sint-Pieters-Rode. All crew members died in the crash, they are buried in this cemetery. Knebloch was not found until a few weeks later.and buried with the remaining four crew members.
