The ruins of the main church of St. Nikolai on Hamburg's Hopfenmarkt are dedicated to the victims of war and tyranny between 1933 and 1945 as a memorial to St. Nikolai.  The Sankt Nikolaikirche was a large church in the center of Hamburg, in the Altstadt. The church building has been turned into ruins by bombing in the Second World War. The 147 meter high Nikolaiturm, once the tallest structure in the world for a short time, is still standing. The ruins are one of the main attractions of the city.

In 1943, during the Second World War, the church was so heavily bombed that they no longer wanted to refurbish it. The last remnants of the wall were demolished in 1951. The tower has remained standing as a memorial, a memorial to the horrors of the war. The crypt has been used again as an exhibition space.
