Hamipre Memorial 87th Infantry Regiment

The 87th Infantry Regiment was mobilized in early August 1914 and transferred to the Belgian border and the Ardennes in Hamipré.

Here took place on 20 August 1914 one of the first battles between French and German troops on Belgian soil: "The Battle of La Justice".  The fighting developed when the French 1st Battalion of the 87th Infantry Regiment ran into the German 21st Division. At the end of the day, 300 of the 1,200 French soldiers were killed and 300 wounded and taken prisoner.
