Assenede

On 9 October 1943 at noon, the tram from Bassevelde was hit by an aircraft bomb in the Stroomstraat in Oosteeklo. Thirty people were killed.

Shortly after the war, a small chapel was built, more or less on the spot where the disaster occurred. It is just along the road that leads to Bassevelde. The accident happened on the other side of the concrete road, where there is now a canal. The chapel was built by Cyriel Van de Keere in 1948, he needed two days to finish it.
