Lille Pigeons Monument

Lille Pigeons Monument

In honor of the carrier pigeons that carried important messages across the lines during the First World War and thus played an important role in communication between the front and rear guards.

In 1936, at the entrance of the zoo in Lille, the French Federation of Carriers Pigeons erected a monument in honor of the '20,000 racing pigeons - killed in action for the fatherland' and the 'homing pigeon holders - executed by the enemy for keeping racing pigeons'.

The personified Peace stands between a flock of birds. At her feet, a shield decorated with a carrier pigeon shatters a serpent, a symbol of the enemy.
