On August 12th, 1941, a Blenheim Bomber V5859 crashed in Vergaertpolder. Killing all three crew and a local civilian. It was one of 56 bombers which took part in the first daytime attack on Germany, bombing the power stations at Cologne.

Flt Sgt G.I. Lewis, Flt Sgt N.S. Cardell and Flt Sgt J.C. Woods are buried in Vlissingen.
