Mesen, Belgium - Memorial Grieve VC

A memorial plaque for Captain Robert C Grieve VC was inaugurated in the Market Square at Mesen (Messines) on Sunday 9 July 2023 at 11am, by Sandy Evrard, Mayor of Mesen, and Nick Evans, Principal of Wesley College, Melbourne.

Captain Grieve, 37th Battalion, AIF was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for British and Commonwealth forces for his bravery on 7 June 1917 at a crossroads near the site of today's Bethleem East Cemetery in Mesen.  His VC has been in the possession of his old high school, Wesley College, Melbourne since his death in 1957.

Dr Ross Bastiaan AM, the designer of the 'Battle of Messines' bronze memorial stone placed in the Market Square at Mesen many years ago, has designed this magnificent plaque.

The Military Attaché to the Australian Ambassador in Belgium, members of the Mesen City Council and representatives of Wesley College, Melbourne, among others were attending.
