Hoelbeek Secret Army Chapel

Secret Army Chapel

This chapel was built in 1947 in memory of the victims of the Second World War. This place was the hiding place for 800 resistance fighters from Bilzen-Genk-Kortessem. Just a few days before the liberation, on September 5 and 7, 1944, Guillaume Engelen, Lambert Meesters and Louis Noben were shot by the Germans. They were on their way to - or stayed in - the resistance shelter here in Hoelbeek. They are buried at the Communal Cemetery in Bilzen.

The marble columns next to the chapel bear the names of 54 resistance fighters who gave their lives for their country.
