Valkenburg (Zuid Holland)

Historical Information

In the center of Valkenburg (ZH), which belongs to the Municipality of Katwijk, next to the Dutch Reformed Church is a small site for those killed in the fighting around Valkenburg airbase in the May days of 1940.

The site is enclosed with its own entrance and is not connected to a normal Cemetery, so it can be considered a War Cemetery or War Cemetery in itself. Here are 35 Dutch War Graves. The War Graves Foundation has designated the cemetery as a Court of Honor.

Since 1962, Hendrik Dirk Buurman, a retired colonel, who survived the war, is buried here. A stone marks his final resting place.
