Sunken Road Cemetery, Contalmaison

The Sunken Road Cemetery was made in July-October 1916, during the middle fighting in the Somme offensive.

 

There are now over 200, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, a small number are unidentified and three Australian graves, which cannot be located, are represented by special memorials. The graves of two German soldiers, buried by the enemy at the end of March 1918, have been removed. The cemetery covers an area of 1,106 square metres, without the access road and is enclosed by a low red brick wall.

46th Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F.

Son of Emily Ellen Cook (formerly Parson), of Macarthur, Victoria, Australia, and the late Henry William Fidler Parson. Native of Allansford, Victoria.

INSCRIPTION: HE LAID DOWN HIS LIFE IN THE DEADLY STRIFE TO KEEP AUSTRALIA FREE

 

Enlisted 26 October 1915. Arrived in Tel-el-Kebir 15 April 1916, embarked Alexandria and disembarked Marseille 14 June 1916.

From there he joined the 46th Bn. on 21 July 1916 and was KIA only 3 weeks later at 13 August 1916, "In the Field in France" at the age of 18.
