Langemark, Belgium - Remembrance Jimmy Speirs 20 August 2023
On Sunday 20 August 2023, GPS1917 held a remembrance ceremony at the Irish memorial stone in Langemark and afterwards a commemorative moment at Jimmy Speirs' grave at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery.
The ceremony starts at 10h30 at the Irish memorial stone in the Hazeweidestraat in Langemark. This will be followed by a commemorative moment at Jimmy Speirs' grave at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery in the Zonnebekestraat in Langemark
Sergeant James H. Speirs was a former professional football player and Scotland International who scored the winning goal in the 1911 FA Cup Final. He was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres on August 20, 1917 at the age of 31. He was also a recipient of the Military Medal (MM).
