Bethune Town Cemetery,  France - Funeral Service.

On Wednesday 19th June at 10.00h a burial service was held for an unknown soldier of the South Wales Borderers at Bethune Town Cemetery, France.

The remains of this soldier were found at Richebourg and are believed to be those of a soldier of 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers who was killed during the Battle of Aubers Ridge in May 1915. Although his regiment is known, it has not been possible to identify him despite extensive research by the UK’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre.

CWGC installed a headstone on his grave commemorating him as a soldier of the South Wales Borderers ‘Known unto God’, and care for his grave in perpetuity.

The service has been organised by the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre and attended by Defence Staff, Regimental representatives, CWGC staff and local dignitaries.
