Meteren Isolated Grave

Historical  Information (Source: Wikipedia)

Morris and his men were buried in the Meteren cemetery. After the war, the war graves were excavated and collected in a British cemetery, Meteren Military Cemetery. Morris' parents wanted to keep and repatriate the body themselves, which was not allowed. They refused to have him buried in the military cemetery and bought 2 hectares of land on the spot where he was killed. They had an open brick mausoleum built there, with a clock on the roof from their stables in England, and buried their son here in 1920.

The grave remained privately owned, but was entered on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, where it is listed as Meteren Isolated Grave. In 1965 the land was transferred to the municipality. The municipality could rent the land to a farmer who had to take care of the maintenance of the grave. In the late 20th century, the tomb was restored with the help of The Western Front Association.
