The German military cemetery Montaigu I was laid out by the German troops during the war. It took mainly fallen soldiers from the eastern section of the Chemin-des-Dames.  After the end of the war, the French military authorities expanded the cemetery by adding beds to the German dead from the area of ​​60 communities and districts, including Mauregny (over 1000 prisoners), Concy-les-Eppes (over 500 prisoners), Berrieux (600 prisoners) and others Victim of the fierce fighting for possession of the Chemin-des-Dames, which like a locking bolt withstood the Allied attacks from autumn 1914 to spring 1915 and in April / May 1917. The German attack at the end of May 1918 and the defensive battles from September to October 1918 again resulted in high losses.

Those resting in Montaigu I belonged to troops whose home bases were in almost all countries and provinces of the former German Empire. Troops from Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, West Prussia and Württemberg were the main participants in the fighting in 1918.
