Chastre French Military Cemetery

The French war cemetery Chastre is the resting place of 1.201 soldiers.

179 are from the First World War (from those 2 are unknown) and 1022 from the Second World War (from those are 171 unknown).

More than thousands of soldiers buried here fell in the spring of 1940 when the German march was to be stopped by Belgium. A lot of soldiers came to the vicinity at the Battle of Gembloers. Some hundreds came from North African, especially from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. After the war many soldiers were repatriated to France and buried there. The cemetery collects graves that were spread across different places in the area and was initiated on May 10, 1970.
