Wood of Peace - Polygon Wood, Belgium

Remember Private Daniel Charles BROWN, 3rd Bn. Otago Regiment, N.Z.E.F. KIA 1st Dec 1917, age 28

100 years after the battle of Passchendaele, a tree is planted for every fallen soldier with a known grave in the two British cemeteries of Polygon Wood. A monument of all missing soldiers is in the central area in the new park. Every tree is dedicated to an identified fallen soldier. There are 523 of them. No distinctions are made in ranks, social position or nationality for the layout of the wood.

Family members of fallen soldiers came first and in a second stage the public was linked up with a fallen soldier for whom no next of kin have registered.
