Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension, Aisne

The Communal Cemetery was extended by the Germans, but the German graves, 320 in number, have been removed.

There are now over 30, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site, beyond the French Military plot, on the North-East side of the cemetery. Of these, a small number are unidentified and a special memorial is erected to a soldier believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials record the names of three United Kingdom soldiers, buried in Monceau-le-Neuf Communal Cemetery German Extension, whose graves could not be found.

Born April 30, 1904 in Charmes (Aisne), summarily executed by hanging on August 30, 1944 in Urvillers (Aisne); resistant, FFI bonding agent. 

Daughter of Alfred Légère, 29, day laborer living in Charmes, and Bernadette Julie Béliez, 20, day laborer. Her birth certificate does not contain any mention of her marriage.

Suzanne Chazal was hanged in the wood of Sissy, in Urvillers; four other FFI were shot on the night of August 29-30, 1944. Mother of four children then living in Ribemont (Aisne), she was captured with her daughter, Paulette, who was able to escape thanks to the help of a German.

Suzanne Chazal's name appears on the monument and stele erected in Urvillers in homage to the massacred, and on the war memorial in Ribemont. His body rests in the military square of the cemetery of the latter town (tomb n ° 7). The Resistance Medal was awarded to him by decree of December 27, 1960 (OJ of January 1, 1961).
