Haldern Kriegsgräberstätte - German War Cemetery

History Information: Volksbund

At the war graves cemetery in Haldern rest 871 dead of the Second World War, including 347 unknowns. There are soldiers who died in the hospital, which had been established in the monastery Aspel, not far from Haldern, in the fighting around Nijmegen in 1944 or during the Allied offensive in February 1945 and its Rhine crossing March 1945.

Central memorial of the cemetery forms a larger than life bronze pieta by sculptor Lorenz Zilken. The cemetery was inaugurated on October 29, 1950. Many formerly buried elsewhere soldiers were reburied here.  The graves list is a book with metal pages, stored at the entrance of the cemetery.
