Tielt Communal Cemetery

History Information (Source: Wikipedia)

On the municipal cemetery of Tielt, there are some Belgian WW2 graves of the Battle for Belgium (10 may – 28 may 1940) and political prisoners. There are Belgian and 32 French graves from the WW1 and 8 Polish graves from WW2.

On 8 September 1944, Tielt and Ruiselede were liberated by the First Polish Armored Division, led by General Stanislaw Maczek. From Poperinge, Ypres, via Roeselare, Tielt and Ruiselede, Aalter to Ghent and on to Beveren and Sint-Niklaas: the Polish soldiers were the outpost of the allied armies and sometimes paid the highest price to bring the torch of liberty to Flanders.
