Arromanches D-Day 75 Garden and 360
AArromanches D-Day 75 Garden
The D-Day 75 Garden was created through donations for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. It is a memorial commemorating British participation in the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. The garden's design features a statue of World War II veteran Bill Pendell MM, seated on a stone looking out. In front of him are statues of young British soldiers who landed on June 6, 1944. Designed by multiple gold medalist John Everiss of the Royal Horticultural Show, the D-Day 75 Garden offers visitors the opportunity to pause, reflect, and learn.
The memorial is surrounded at either end by two statues facing each other. The left side depicts Pendell, seated on the stone and looking back at his 22-year-old self. The young figure is frozen before storming the beach with his comrades. Some struggle to reach shore as the waves crash. The memorial depicts four breaking waves and depicts the rough sea conditions of June 6, 1944. The metal poles protruding from the sea represent the beach obstacles the soldiers faced, known as "Rommel's Asparagus."
It is at this scene that Pendell sits, 75 years later, to reflect on what took place. The memorial encourages visitors to reflect on what it must have been like, the courage it took, and seeing friends fall around them in battle. The garden is a fitting tribute and helps us remember D-Day and the Normandy campaign
