Caen D-Day Museum
The Mémorial de Caen Museum is unique in France. It offers the public insight into the Second World War, from its beginnings shortly after the First World War to its final consequences in 1989.
A large section of the Mémorial de Caen Museum is dedicated to the individual experiences of men and women caught up in the war: persecution, rationing, occupation, deployment, life during bombardments and combat, and so on.
Another section of the museum tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. The exhibitions are constantly changing and allow visitors to experience the war in all its complexity. The Mémorial de Caen Museum is located on the site of the underground command bunker of the 716th German Infantry Division. In 1944, this division was responsible for the defense of the coast north of Caen. The command post, 70 meters long and 5 meters wide, was restored in 2013. It provides an insight into life in the coastal defense and life during the occupation.
