Houthulst, Belgium – Remembrance Ceremony
On Tuesday 23rd June 2026, following the recent vandalism at the Belgian Military Cemetery in Houthulst, a ceremony took place to temporarily restore the soldiers' identities until the graves are restored to their former glory. Primary school children, together with the War Heritage Institute and a delegation from the Belgian Army, hung temporary signs at each damaged grave.
info: VRT news: In the month of May 2026, bronze nameplates were ripped off more than 143 graves by vandals, and several gravestones were cracked or broken. “We could no longer repair six headstones, but had to replace them. Now we still have to repair more than 140 nameplates on gravestones. For 102 headstones, that is not a problem, we can reuse those nameplates. But for the other nameplates, there is no solution yet. For that, we need to consult with a number of authorities.”
