La Cambe German War Cemetery
Historical Information (Source: Volksbund)
This cemetery contains the remains of German soldiers who died during the fighting that followed the Allied landings in Normandy. After the cemetery was completed in September 1961, more than seven hundred German soldiers recovered from other locations were added. A total of 21,160 soldiers are now buried there, 207 of whom could no longer be identified.
In the center of the cemetery lies a mound adorned with a basalt cross flanked by two figures and the inscription: "Gott hat das letzte Wort" (God has the last word). Around this mound, the graves are divided into 49 rectangular plots, some containing up to 400 graves. These plots are marked by flat slabs in the grass, interspersed with groups of five basalt crosses at regular intervals.
